Radical SR3 SL: A Truly Radical and Unforgiving Ride

Launched with the apparent intention of rejuvenating the sports car segment, the latest among the Radicals – SR3 SL – does seem promising. The street-legal edition ‘SL’ is the first ever Radical to bag EU tyre label approval.

Radical has proven itself as a manufacturer with a meaningful business plan and realistic products since its inception in 1997. It was founded to make the most of increasing fervor for track days. Radical’s first range of motorbike-engined cars was so well-accepted that the company decided to manufacture a one-make race car series.

Over 1000 cars have rolled out from its production line till date, including one that grabbed the 20thspot at 24 Hours of Le Mans, 2009. The new SR3 SL, though, is its most actively road biased vehicle till date.

Design and Appearance

The SR3 SL, where SL stands for Street Legal, differs from the existing SR3 visually. The radii around the cockpit edge and frontal splitter have been broadened. Narrower rear wing and wheels placed further inboard, make this Radical a tad different, odd and less fast compared to its brethren. The car dons glass fiber bodywork and weighs 765kg.


Most Radicals come empowered with a 1300-1500cc superbike engine, generally Suzuki Hayabusa-derived. But the SR3 SL gets a Ford 2.0l turbocharged unit that builds up a 300bhp.


The SR3 SL’s interiors comprise sliding molded bench seats, including integral headrests on roll bars as against pads in other Radicals. The padded steering wheel, adjustable electric mirrors, a light and a heater are some features that make it road legal.

It has a decent driving position but the room inside will make two occupants struggle for shoulder room. The car offers a terrific view of the outside and the front wings have been designed to facilitate easy positioning of the vehicle. The switchgear and equipments are pretty straightforward.

The SR3 SL scores low on practicality though. It falls short of space to incorporate boot or even a small cubby.

Performance and Engineering

The Radical will be available with only a single engine option coupled with six-speed sequential transmission. The motor easily starts at the press of a button, and is remarkably and surprisingly quiet. On road, changing gears might emit an occasional clonk, but operating the clutch is pretty easy.

Radical claims that it’s SR3 SL can go from zero to 60mph in 3.4s flat and 100mph in 8.4s. The maximum speed it can traverse at is 161mph.

The throttle response and traction are decent. Despite absence of ABS, there’s good braking and pedal feel in the dry. In the wet, however, retardation is fine, but it’s difficult to tell when the wheel locks.

If you are setting your eyes on a car like Radical SR3 SL, then you most probably know that it’s going to come dear. And if fuel efficiency is what concerns you, you must consider a different sort of a car. While the claimed fuel economy is 28mpg, expect an average of 14.2mpg on an open road.

At £69,850, the Radical SR3 SL offers terrific performance, raw drive appeal and quality feel. The only downsides are a slight turbo lag, odd modifications for type approval and that it tramlines on the road. All in all, one of the most intoxicating track-cars to date.

I’ve enjoyed long hair my entire adult life. Although I love the versatility of my flowing hairstyle, the longer length can quickly show signs of damage and dryness. Today I’m happy to share some of my favorite winter hair care tips with you.


Use Hydrating Natural Oils

To keep the frizzies away, turn to natural oils. During the winter, I treat my hair to a super-hydrating, oil-based treatment at least once every two weeks. This treatment restores shine and flexibility to even the driest hair.

I start by wetting my hair with warm water. Then I smooth a small dab of coconut oil, a tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil, or a similar amount of jojoba oil through my hair. To evenly distribute the oil, I often use a comb. Then I let my hair soak in the moisturizer for at least five minutes. Finally, I finish by rinsing my hair with warm water, shampooing, and rinsing with cool water for extra shine.

Switch to Con-Pooing

When I started swimming in a chlorinated pool regularly, I noticed my hair was also getting extra brassy — especially during the winter months. To restore my hair’s soft texture, I started leaving my bottle of shampoo out of my gym bag.

I’ve switched to con-pooing three days a week; I wash my hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. Not only does my hair soak in the hydrating ingredients of the conditioner, my hair doesn’t get stripped of its natural oils from using shampoo.

Let Hair Air Dry

Finally, to keep hair healthy during the dry winter months, keep heat away from your tresses as much as possible. Applying extra heat to already parched hair makes it even more dry and brittle.

After washing your hair, wrap a bath towel around your head and squeeze the excess water from your hair. Don’t rub. This causes tangles. Then, comb your damp hair and let it air dry. If you must use heated styling tools, apply a heat protectant spray to keep hair healthy.

Determine which five days are best for you, pencil in blocks of time on your calendar, and stick with them.

Push yourself to complete 45 minutes a day on each of the days you exercise. You may not be able to exercise for 45 minutes at once, so split it up. ACSM states that intermittent exercise, such as ten to fifteen minute sessions, which accumulate to 30 to 40 minutes a day, are as effective as continuous sessions. This lets you break up the exercise each day in to more digestible chunks.

Lift weights to add muscle to your body. Spend 15 to 20 minutes three times a week lifting weights. Focus on large muscle groups, such as your chest, back and arms. These exercises will build muscle and it takes energy to maintain muscle. This translates into a higher metabolism, which means that over time you will be burning calories at a higher rate, even when you are not exercising.

Eating Right

Meet with a dietician and have her measure your resting metabolic rate. This is measured by having you breathe into a device while at rest for about 5 minutes. The device can then determine how many calories you burn per day at rest, just to maintain your weight. Using this information combined with details about your daily physical activity, the dietician can provide you with the exact number of calories you should ingest each day to lose weight.

Work with the dietician to find low-fat and low-calorie recipes that you like. Too many people try to force themselves to eat healthy foods which they do not even enjoy. Tell your dietician what your favorite foods are and you might be surprised when she gives you low-calorie versions of them to meet your needs.

Getting Help

Talk with a friend or family member about your weight loss plan and ask her to support you. You need someone to stand behind you, push you and encourage you. This person could even be an exercise partner, which will help you hold each other accountable to regular exercise. It even makes exercise more enjoyable when you have someone to talk with while you exercise.

You may not think much about how air quality in the home is affected by the constant collision of odors until you start to realize just how many different scented items can be found inside the house. How to Survive in Severe Weather When Your Car Stalls

If your car’s engine suddenly stops, coasting safely to the side of the road is a well-known emergency procedure. Yet would you know how to survive in a snow storm or a sudden flood? How about the scorching heat of the California desert?


Floods or Flash Floods

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) explains that water as shallow as two feet in depth will float a vehicle. As little as six inches of rapidly-flowing water sweeps the average person off of his feet.

  • Exit a stalled car immediately. Remaining in the vehicle puts you in danger of being swept away with the automobile. Run for higher ground.
  • Do not attempt to push a stalled car through a flooded area. If the water buoys the car, there is a good chance that its mass turns against you — if you are pushing against the flow or wind — and causes serious injuries.

Winter/Snow Storm

Surviving with a stalled car in the winter is made more difficult by the potentially snowed-in roads that make quick rescue questionable. If you live in an area with severe winter weather, or even if you just plan a leisurely drive into the mountains during a fall, winter or spring day, preparing ahead of time is a key-element for survival.

  • Pack a survival kit with extra clothes, blankets, food and water to last you for at least four days. Add a bright red or orange emergency flag to tie to the antenna. It enhances visibility of the car for rescuers — especially if you drive a light-colored vehicle that is difficult to spot in snow — and for you, if you must leave the car for brief periods of time.
  • Share your itinerary with someone who is not coming with you. Agree on a check-in time. This friend or family member will know the route you took and can alert authorities if you fail to communicate as planned — especially if a sudden blizzard occurred.
  • Push the car into a position that has it facing the wind. Vehicles are designed to let air sweep over them in this manner. It decreases cabin heat loss.
  • Stay with your car. North Dakota State University (NDSU) experts state that sitting in a stalled car protects against the wind chill factor.
  • Use chemical heating sources, such as Sterno fuel. Remember that combustion creates carbon monoxide, a toxic gas that will cause fatigue, sleep and eventually death. Crack windows on both sides of the car to allow oxygen into the cabin.


Desert Areas

Traveling in the desert takes you to some gorgeous sites and picturesque vistas. It also puts you into severe danger. High daytime temperatures and the absence of shade and breeze make it a deadly environment.

  • Write down your travel itinerary and share it with a third party. Agree on set check-in times during your trip. Stipulate that your friend will alert authorities as soon as you miss two consecutive check-in times.
  • Pack one gallon of drinking water per passenger. Pack orange or bright red tarps. You can attach them to your car as a sun shelter and shade; the color makes you easily visible from the air.
  • Open the hood and trunk; it makes your car easier to spot and signals that you have trouble.
  • Stay with the car.

It goes without saying that you should try using your cell phone to summon help as soon as your car stalls. That said, there are plenty of areas in mountains and deserts where your reception will be non-existent. Do not count on your cell phone as your lifeline to help; a third party emergency plan — as discussed — is your best bet for making it out alive.

Big Spoilers on Small Passenger Cars

A small spoiler is usually added by the manufacturer to add some pizzazz to the lines of your vehicle. They make a Honda Accord look neat and attractive. In race cars, the rear spoilers make up for the missing vehicle weight and force the cars to hug the track simply by capitalizing on the physics of a downward force. In contrast, the huge spoiler you see so frequently on the back of an older Mitsubishi Lancer or Dodge Neon is not only expensive, but it looks silly. More clothing rack than racing spoiler, it mars the appearance of the vehicle.


Strobe Lights

Maybe it is a Santa Monica thing, but strobe lights in and underneath cars are getting out of control. Not only are they overrated car accessories, but having a sickly yellow glow underneath your vehicle while parked at a railroad crossing just is not cool. Making matters worse, there are some drivers who have not yet heard that music beat strobes went out of style with the 80s and techno punk. Thus, it is not uncommon to pull up next to a car with an overly loud bass beat – whatever happened to the treble? – and see the interior light up like a Griswold Christmas tree. These hyped vehicle frills are useless and borderline dangerous. (By the way, the yellow glow of the strobes does nothing for the look of your complexion.)


Bug Shields

In theory, these acrylic strips fit on the hood of the truck or van and prevent rocks from hitting the hood and pitting the windshield. In practice, these little devices are not worth the money or the time you spend installing them. First and foremost, unless you get exactly the right size, the entire contraption will not fit; secondly, even if it fits into place nice and snug, the bug shield has the tendency to come off if you are forced to travel ill-maintained highways. If you live in sunny Southern California’s L.A. area, factor in the numerous potholes. Adding insult to injury, some of these overrated accessories actually require you to drill holes for a tight fit. Add to this the un-cool factor – similar to the one you would suffer for adding a hood bra, mud flaps or DIY peel-off window tint – and it is a good idea to stay away from the bug shields.
